Concussion FAQs
1. What are the signs & symptoms of a concussion? Concussion symptoms vary but often include headaches, dizziness, nausea, balance problems, sensitivity to light or noise, difficulty concentrating, memory issues, and fatigue. Some people may also experience mood changes, sleep disturbances, or blurred vision. Symptoms can appear immediately or develop over hours or days.
2. How is a concussion diagnosed? A concussion is diagnosed through a combination of medical history, symptom assessment, and physical and neurological exams. Clinicians may assess balance, coordination, eye movement, and cognitive function. Imaging tests like CT scans or MRIs are typically not needed unless there is concern for a more serious brain injury.
3. How long does concussion recovery take? Recovery time varies for each individual. Most people recover within a few weeks, but symptoms can persist for months or longer in some cases (known as post-concussion syndrome). Factors such as age, injury severity, previous concussions, and underlying medical conditions can affect recovery.
4. What treatments are available for concussion symptoms? Treatment focuses on symptom management and a gradual return to daily activities. Depending on the symptoms, treatment may include: Physical therapy for balance and dizziness issues; occupational therapy for cognitive and visual difficulties; cognitive rehabilitation therapy for memory, attention, and problem-solving challenges; psychotherapy to address depression, anxiety, and life-style strategies.
5. Can I go back to work, school, or sports after a concussion? A gradual return is recommended based on symptom severity. Students and employees may need temporary accommodations like reduced workload or frequent breaks. Athletes should follow a step-by-step return-to-play protocol guided by a healthcare provider to prevent further injury.
6. What happens during my first visit for concussion testing? Your first visit typically includes: 1. ImPACT Test - a user friendly, computer-based program which is designed to test cognitive function like concentration, memory and reaction time. Includes hard copy results to take home or to your physician. 2. BESS & VOMS Testing w/Consultation: BESS (Balance Error Scoring System) is an objective method of assessing static postural stability. Information from the BESS can be used to assist in making return to play decisions following concussion. Vestibular-Ocular Motor Screening (VOMS) has become a key piece of post-concussion evaluation that provides a basic understanding of a patient’s oculomotor and vestibular functioning. Includes hard copy results to take home or to your physician. 3. The concussion treatment will provide an assessment analysis and schedule a discussion of personalized treatment plans and recovery strategies that could include: a. Occupational Therapy b. Physical Therapy c. Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy d. Psychotherapy
7. How can therapies help with concussion recovery? Physical therapy can address dizziness, balance issues, and neck pain. Occupational therapy helps with vision problems, cognitive function, and daily tasks. Cognitive rehabilitation therapy focuses on memory, attention, and problem-solving skills to improve thinking and daily function. Psychotherapy focuses on strategies to manage symptoms such as anxiety and depression.
8. Are there any long-term effects of a concussion? Most people recover fully, but some may experience persistent symptoms (post-concussion syndrome). Repeated concussions can increase the risk of long-term cognitive and neurological issues, such as chronic headaches, concentration difficulties, and mood changes. Seeking proper treatment and allowing full recovery before resuming high-risk activities can reduce long-term effects?
9. What should I do if my symptoms worsen over time? If symptoms worsen, contact your healthcare provider. Severe symptoms like repeated vomiting, worsening headaches, slurred speech, or changes in consciousness may indicate a more serious injury and require immediate medical attention.
10. What types of payment do you accept? We accept Private Pay, Community Health Choices, and Pennsylvania Head Injury Programing funding. We currently do not accept Commerical Insurance, however your insurance plan many allow you to submit for reimbursement to cover evaluations, therapy, and follow-up care.
